Colored belt testing

The training journey starts with the yellow belt test and ends after ten tests, with the first-degree (first Dan) black belt test. The examination is overseen by the GranMaster and by the founder Masters. The exam includes practical and oral requirements. The candidates must execute hand and kick techniques belonging to their exam program, their belt form, traditional and personal defense techniques, and go through a body contact sparring session. Finally comes the question-and-answer part of the test.

Black belt testing

The black belt test takes place once a year. This exam to obtain a new Dan requires a considerable effort from the candidates. Practitioners are considered candidates for the black belt test only if they pass a series of tests to allow them to take the black belt test. The exam includes written and practical requirements. The candidate must execute and demonstrate the understanding of hand and kick techniques, forms and defense techniques belonging to the entire known program. This is the exam modality until the candidates reach the 3rd Dan. Hwal Moo Do practitioners who candidate for 4th (and following) Dan black belt testing can take the exam in Washington D.C., overseen by Gran Master Kun Hwa Lee, Hwal Moo Do founder. Candidates who pass the exam must pass a series of additional tests before they could wear the new degree which is assigned an year after the exam date.

What is Hwal Moo Do

icon

The literal translation of Hwal Moo Do or Hwalmoodo (hangul: 활 무 도 hanja: 活 武 道) is “The way (or art) of life protection”. Hwal Moo Do is a self-defense martial art which was created by Grandmaster Kun Hwa Lee. It incorporates kicking techniques belonging to the korean martial arts tradition and techniques taken from Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Karate, Hapkido, Judo, Jujitsu and Kickboxing. Practicing Hwal Moo Do means studying traditional, kickboxing and self-defense techniques.

Our teachings

The foundation of the Hwal Moo Do (or hwalmoodo) is the '''life protection''' (Hwal Moo) in its broadest sense. This includes self-defense, recognizing and avoiding the dangers, having a healthy lifestyle, protecting loved ones, staying safe and setting as a good example. The teaching of Hwal Moo Do is based on four eastern philosophical movements: (1) Confucianism in regards of the discipline and justice (2) Sun Tzu and “The Art of War” in regards of the strategy (3) Taoism in regards of the “no-action” (wu wei) and the union of opposites concepts and finally (4) Buddhism in regards of the existence of the pain and some meditation techniques. From a practical point of view Hwal Moo Do mixes the traditional martial art with the modern Kickboxing training and the self-defense techniques.

Practice

Entering a Hwal Moo Do or Korean Dragon practice room means leaving out our different backgrounds, our political thoughts and our religious beliefs. For this reason, once each practitioner has put on the uniform, he leaves behind any other personal effects. Each practitioner is also required to maintain a polite and respectful behavior towards the teacher and the fellow practitioners. In fact, the lesson begins and ends with a greeting to the teacher who will set a good example even for the youngest students. The lessons include athletic and technical training in both traditional and kickboxing combat. Hwal Moo Do and Korean Dragon represent two aspects of HMD. Two different but parallel paths that see on the one hand a wider approach to martial practice (Hwal Moo Do) and on the other a training and growth closer to the practice of a combat sport (Korean Dragon).
